The most common problem I hear from people is they aren't making the kind of money they want to make with their Internet business. They don't know what the problem is and they want me to help.

I'll tell you what the problem is. Most of these people are what I like to call opportunity seekers. These are people that have too many sites and don't spend any time focusing on ONE business. They may have 20 or 30 websites, with each site only breaking even or making a few hundred dollars every month.

Most opportunity seekers are not making the money they want or achieving their financial goals. Why?

They are making a common mistake. They have too many sites, too many interests. This prevents them from focusing their efforts and creating the six figure income they dream of.

Focus Is The Key To Long-Term Success

If you want to succeed on the Internet, you are much better-off staying focused. That means starting off with one site or idea and perfecting it before moving on to the next Internet adventure. Far too many peoplehave a get rich quick mind-set. In fact, I'd say almost all opportunity seekers have this mind-set.

They jump from one program to another hoping one of them will lead to success.
Opportunity seekers are always the first to jump on the next big moneymaking bandwagon. It may be one thing one month, another thenext month.

They may try to concentrate on affiliate marketing thenswitch dramatically to e-book marketing the next.

Whatever seems to be working for others they jump into with wild abandon, without considering their true talents, abilities and interests.

These people are looking for some easy way to make money. They think they can make money with Google AdSense or just a web page, or even with a multilevel marketing program. This is NOT how an entrepreneur thinks! However, this is exactly how an opportunist thinks.
They always are looking for shortcuts, and then wonder why it isn't working.

It isn't working because you have no focus. You must have focus. You must think like an entrepreneur. Focus is one of the most vital aspects of your success. My advice to these newbies is shut down 29 of your sitesand focus on one site, the one that best represents your interests.
Optimize it. Work on refining it. Refine your sales process and your back end on this single site and make it successful BEFORE you move on to the next site.
Yes, I have many sites. But I am Dan Lok. You're not there yet. Perfect your one site. THEN you can think about moving on to other moneymaking ventures.

Horizontal Vs. Vertical Business

Many people have what I call a horizontal business. A horizontal business has many sites in many different niches, like hobby niches.
People who own horizontal businesses have 20 or more separate business ventures. I recommend having a vertical business instead. A vertical business is a business that has depth and focus.

Having a vertical business means if you have a product in a particular niche, like stock trading, focus on selling products related to that and that only. Put all your eggs in one basket and create a funnel effect. This way you'll have one group of customers and you can become a big fish ina small pond.
You'll have all your eggs in one place yes… but you'llbecome an expert egg layer and watch all your eggs hatch with great success.
Make sense?
What is the problem with a horizontal business? You aren't specialized.
It's almost impossible to make a six-figure income with this kind of business because you don't spend enough time on any ONE business.
When you have a vertical business, you have fine-tuned your business so well competitors have a hard time keeping up with you. People can't compete. You also build a strong client base with satisfied customers.

Think Like An Entrepreneur

So, the biggest problem people have is they are opportunity seekers.
The key is thinking like a true Internet entrepreneur. Don't jump on the trend bandwagon. Don't ask what the shortcuts are. An entrepreneur has a long-term vision. You have to have a one-year, five year and ten yearvision. Find out what you want your business to look like in the long-term.
Ask yourself, What do I want to accomplish ultimately? Then decide whether your activities fit with your goals. Stop jumping from one program to another. Focus on one program, one site, and one great idea. This is what you have to do if you want to make six figures. It has nothing to do with your knowledge, skill set experience etc. It has to do more with your focus.
Sit down. Think about it.
Stop jumping from one program to another and stop getting sucked into false moneymaking schemes. Find out what your goals are, what you want to accomplish.
This is a far superior approach. Yes, it takes a lot of energy. But its worth it. In the long-term it's much less tiring than diversifying your business.
Once you are an expert in your industry or niche, THEN you can think about diversifying your business.

Today I just felt the need to express my sincere opinion about the difference of understanding the mere basic steps that, I belief, the rich took to arrive at the high podiums in which they are able to climb up and up with no reason to fall.

The steps they took is a simple one and that is to know this simple equation for the mind:-

In much simpler term is how you manage your finances is most important.

It urks me to hear people say things like "I change my job to earn more money","How can I make more money?" and "You should upgrade yourself (profesionally and/or academically) to earn more money"

HOW TO HANDLE THOSE PESKY NEIGHBORS

Sometimes neighbors just don’t get it. They know you work at home, but they only seem to get the "at home" part and forget about the "work" part. The result: a trickle of "innocent" requests that, if not handled properly, can grow to a deluge.

"Would you mind watching the kids while I run to the store?" "Since you’re at home, could I have my new exercise machine delivered to you?" "I don’t have a fax machine, so…." You get the idea.

My suggestion is that you approach these intrusions on your business life in a business-like manner. Draw up a Price List that you can hand to people when they hit on you for free services. It shouldn’t be too hard to use your existing software to turn out something official looking. Explain that this is your "standard" pricing structure and, if they like the prices, perhaps you can do business.

There are two routes you can go with this idea. The first is to use your "Price List" as a way to discourage any future requests. You can do this subtly by charging ridiculous amounts or you can let your imagination take off and have some fun with it. For example:

Babysitting: $5/hr ($100/hr if you don’t want them locked in the tool shed)
Face lifts (results not guaranteed): $1,000 and up depending on difficulty.
Having an affair with your spouse: Negotiable. Please submit picture of your spouse in a bathing suit.

The other alternative is to seize this as an opportunity to widen your income stream. Many home-based businesspeople pursue their avocation on a part-time basis and might welcome the chance to make a little extra money. If so, give some thought to the services you’d be willing to provide. That could include things like sending and receiving faxes, accepting deliveries for absent neighbors, or typing resumes and the like.

Obviously, include only those services you will feel comfortable performing and give special thought to services that you can provide at little or no additional bother.

Price your services fairly. Check locally to see what others are charging for similar services. You might want to charge slightly less (on the theory that you have lower overhead), exactly the same, or slightly more (on the theory that you are more convenient to the customer). If you go this route, you might consider distributing your Price List along with a friendly cover letter to households in your neighborhood.

Dissatisfied Contentment - Stagnant Career Syndrome

Sitting here this morning working at home (I am a Realtor), I turned on the television. One of the all-time great daytime shows was on - The Price is Right! Bob Barker, what a career! What if he had not taken of advantage of the opportunity when it was presented 35 years ago? How did walking through that door of opportunity change his life? I am sure he would have found success in other places but would it have been at the same level? No one really knows the answer to that question. But, we do know the answer to what saying "yes" to that opportunity did for him!

What about you and your career? Have there been opportunities that presented themselves but you refused to "walk through that door?" If so, why not? Is the fear of the unknown such an intense fear that you are frozen in place? Is the comfort level such that you don't want to upset the apple cart?

Change is something we as humans don't embrace, at least enthusiastically. Even in your current position are you ever presented with changes to rules or procedures? What is your initial reaction? Are you so set in your ways that adapting to change creates stress? Sometimes change is good. I heard it said once, or maybe read it someplace, that if "you always do what you always done, you will always get what you always got." There is truth to be found in those words! Is there not a better way to do what you do?

Dissatisfaction with your current situation is a sign that you need to implement some type of change. Perhaps it is only a procedural modification? Perhaps it is a new focus. When things get stagnant we often are suffering from tunnel vision. Opening up to new ideas, new methodologies, is the first step to recovery - recovery from the disease of the stagnant career syndrome.

What are the symptoms of stagnant career syndrome? Some of the symptoms include a lack of enthusiasm, seeing the glass as half empty (pessimism), repetitive processes without positive results and dissatisfied contentment (oxymoron?). These manifestations, when combined, leave you in a state of confusion. Confusion over your future. Confusion over which step to take next.

So how do respond to stagnant career syndrome? First of all, don't concentrate on failures only. Sure, you should identify the things that are working. They may not be producing results at the level you desire but they are contributing positively to your career goals. You should also identify the things that are not working. Write all of these activities down. When you put the issues on paper the picture will become better focused. Put the goal or objective on paper.

What are some changes that need to be implemented? Perhaps it is something as simple as obtaining additional education or skillsets. Perhaps it is just the environment in which you are operating? Don't forget that those around you may be the anchor holding your career down? It could be the processes you are doing are appropriate yet the environment does not support your success. Lets say you are a farmer. You have the technique mastered for planting a garden. You know the time of the year to plant, the types of crop your environment favors, how to operate the necessary equipment, all the steps. However, if the soil (environment) is not appropriate for the desired results, nothing will ever develop. If a crop does result from your efforts, it may not produce the greatest harvest for the efforts expended. To maximize the return on the efforts, the farmer simply must plant in the right soil, or modify the soil by way of fertilizers, in which to maximize his return.

After all, this analysis the only modification required my be a change in your environment. Or, a modification in the environment. Time to make a change to your environment? Recognize the situation for what it is and plant your crop in a new soil! You may have no idea how great the harvest will be. Taking advantage of opportunities and resources available may be all that is need to cure this thing - stagnant career syndrome. Good luck and may your harvest be bountiful!

My lifestyle determines when I will work at my Internet Marketing Business, what days I work, what hours I work. When I start work and when I am finished for the day.

I am free to choose where I live. If I decide I no longer want to live in one State, I would prefer to live in another State, I can move. My Internet Marketing Business moves with me. My lifestyle determines my Business.

I wake up on Wednesday and the weather is warm and sunny, a great day to go to the lake, I can go. My lifestyle determines my business.

If I want to take an extra week off because I have been working long hours, I can take it without having to ask permission. My lifestyle determines my Business.

If my family wants to go some place special this year and spend extra time, I do not have to say no because I need to get back to work. I just plug my laptop into the phone line and stay a little longer. My lifestyle determines my Business.

I work long hours and I work a lot of days each year. I am a hard boss to work for and very demanding. Yet my lifestyle demands a lot of freedom and my lifestyle determines my Business.

What I do not understand is how I survived and enjoyed life before my Internet Business.

Extra Income means an income that you can earn apart from the regular income coming in from employment or normal work. This earning can be used to payoff your outstanding debts or build up a capital account or spend it on luxuries that you could only think about before. Everyone seems to want a second income but no one wants to work a second job, so the extra income is normally seen as a windfall.
When we compare income levels in different countries, it is evident that the average income per person is less than $15,000 a year--in other words, where many people are near the breadline -- Extra Income really does make people happier and improves their lifestyle.
But countries which have average income above the normal subsistence level of approximately $15,000 a year, happiness seems to be income independent. For example, an average American ranks richer than an average Indian or an Austrian, but also less happy.

With today’s hectic schedules and busy lifestyles it is often hard to even fond the time to share a meal together. But repeated research has proven that families who make a habit of sitting down together for at least one meal a day have happier, healthier children and stronger family relationships. Eating together as a family not only makes it easier for your child to eat healthy, family mealtimes can reduce the chance of substance abuse, premature sexual activity, and disruptive behavior like fighting.
The key to a quality family meal is to encourage conversation between every member of the family. For many families, dinner time is one of the few opportunities for everyone to talk together. Take advantage of this special and valuable family time by planning a few creative ways to get everyone involved.
Young children will love designing their own placemats while dinner is being prepared. The Guidecraft Paper Center can sit right on the table while your child draws, and can be put away at dinnertime. Ask her to draw a picture of the favorite part of her day and encourage other family members to make a placemat as well. Leaving the table to answer the telephone, or talking to a friend or colleague instead of family members, can also interfere with a family dinnertime, so be sure everyone understands that cell phones are put away and turn the answering machine on.
Vary your family mealtimes from time to time to keep it an exiting part of everyone’s day. If it’s not possible for everyone to get together for dinner, plan a family breakfast time instead. Pull out the nice dinnerware on occasion and dress up the table as if you have company because your family needs to feel special too. Adventuresome families can even plan a theme dinner and dress up for dinnertime!
Regardless of what you serve or what you talk about, keep your family mealtime a relaxing, pleasant, and enjoyable time. Dinnertime is a time to share and enjoy one another’s company.

If your pursuit of happiness does not lead you to genuine happiness then perhaps you are missing one of the most important keys to personal happiness -- loving yourself.
Life isn’t the sweetest candy. Sometimes, when I feel like the world is just too heavy, I look around and find people who continued to live fascinating and wonderful lives. And then thoughts come popping into my mind like bubbles from nowhere – “How did their life become so adorably sweet? How come they still can manage to laugh and play around despite a busy stressful life?” Then I pause and observed for awhile… I figured out that maybe, they start to work on a place called ‘self’.
So, how does one become genuinely happy? Step 1 is to love yourself.
My theology professor once said that “loving means accepting.” To love oneself means to accept that you are not a perfect being, but behind the imperfections must lie a great ounce of courage to be able to discover ways on how to improve your repertoire to recover from our mistakes.
Genuine happiness also pertains to contentment. When you are contented with the job you have, the way you look, with your family, your friends, the place you live in, your car, and all the things you now have – truly, you know the answer to the question “how to be genuinely happy.”
When we discover a small start somewhere from within, that small start will eventually lead to something else, and to something else. But if you keep questioning life lit it has never done you any good, you will never be able to find genuine happiness.
I believe that life is about finding out about right and wrong, trying and failing, wining and losing. These are things that happen as often as you inhale and exhale. Failure, in a person’s life has become as abundant and necessary as air. But this should not hinder us from becoming happy.
How to be genuinely happy in spite all these? I tell you… every time you exert effort to improve the quality of life and your being, whether it is cleaning up your room, helping a friend, taking care of your sick dog, fail on board exams and trying again, life gives you equivalent points for that.
Imagine life as a big score board like those which are used in the NFLs. Every time you take a step forward, you make scoring points. Wouldn’t it be nice to look at that board at the end of each game and think to yourself “Whew! I got a point today. I’m glad I gave it a shot.”, instead of looking at it all blank and murmur “Geez, I didn’t even hit a score today. I wish I had the guts to try out. We could have won!” and then walk away.
Genuine happiness isn’t about driving the hottest Formula 1 car, nor getting the employee of the year award, earning the highest 13th month pay, or beating the sales quota. Sometimes, the most sought after prizes in life doesn’t always go to the fastest, the strongest, the bravest or not even the best. So, how do you become genuinely happy? Every one has his own definition of ‘happiness’. Happiness for a writer may mean launching as much best selling books as possible. Happiness for a basketball rookie may mean getting the rookie of the year award. Happiness for a beggar may mean a lot of money. Happiness for a business man may mean success. So, really now, how do we become genuinely happy? Simple. You don’t have to have the best things in this world. Its about doing and making the best out of every single thing. When you find yourself smiling at your own mistake and telling your self “Oh, I’ll do better next time”, you carry with you a flame of strong will power to persevere that may spread out like a brush fire. You possess a willingness to stand up again and try – that will make you a genuinely happy person.
When you learn to accept yourself and your own faults. You pass step 1 in the project “how to become genuinely happy”.For as long as you know how to accept others, you will also be accepted. For as long as you love and know how to love, you will receive love ten folds back.
Again, throw me that same question “how to become genuinely happy?”. I’ll refer you to a friend of mine who strongly quoted- “Most of us know that laughter is the best medicine to life’s aches and pain. But most of us don’t know that the best kind of laughter is laughter over self. Coz then you don’t just become happy… you become free.”

We often fall into the trap of thinking we have to wait until retirement to have our life be just right. (Of course, in retirement people often get bored.) So stop waiting! This article is written to help you design your ideal life.
Then ask the question: What would it take to have this NOW, or this year? If that's absolutely not possible (and it probably is, so look hard!), then you design a plan to reach that.
Following is an extract of the Perfect Lifestyle Program. (Better still, you can currently download the full Program free of charge at www.life-coaching-resource.com Look for the Design Your Life option.)
Instructions: Print out the following, and create a picture of your ideal lifestyle in the following seven areas. Use the questions as a guide and also add your own questions. Assume money is not an issue i.e. you have plenty. You can worry about HOW to get your picture later. Now dream!
a) Self Care
How many massages per week? How much drinking water per day? What kind of body? Exercise program? Diet? How much energy would I have? How many walks would I take? How much peaceful time/fresh air? How much sleep would I get? How do I dress?
b) Home Environment
Where would I live geographically? Which suburb? Which country? House/unit? On the water? In the country? Friendly community? Climate? What would my bedroom look like? My yard? How tidy is the house? Do I have a cleaner? Someone who shops for me? Does the washing? What car do I drive?
c) Relationship
>From your partner, do you want a commitment for life, or a commitment for now? What kind of commitment do YOU want to make? Do you want an exclusive relationship, or one where you explore other relationships? To what limits? Kids? What's your ideal sex life?
d) Friends and Family
How many friends do you want in your life? Do they drop by spontaneously, or set up weeks in advance? Do your friends know your other friends? Are they rich? Interesting? Creative? Warm and Open? Or busy and stressed? Ideally, how would your relationship with your mother look? Father? Siblings? (Don't let your history block you here. Create the 'ideal' relationships!
e) Career
For this exercise, remember you don't 'need' a career. Assume you have plenty of money, right? So in your perfect world, is there a job you would enjoy? What would you create or make? What service would you provide. What kinds of things have you enjoyed in past careers, or what do you think you would be good at? What kind of people would you work with? What hours would you work? Work from home, or in a really funky office building with a slide down the middle?
f) Enjoyment
What do you do in your ideal lifestyle? Garden? Paint? Fish? Bushwalk? When you gather with friends or family, what do you do? Do you travel? Where? How often? What do you do when traveling?
g) A Cause/Purpose
If the rest of your life was perfect and handled, to whom would you contribute? To your family? The environment? The Community? Child abuse victims? Politics? What do you strongly believe in? What do you love? What do you hate? How would you contribute? Donate money, time, brain power? What legacy would you like to leave behind when you die?
The first, and most important step, is to create the picture. This alone increases the chance of it happening without you doing anything. However, if you're willing to take action, and are up for the game of creating your perfect lifestyle, the

Are You Trading Your Time For Money? by Han Ming
Once upon a time there was a little village. It was a great place to live except for one problem - there was no water supply unless it rained! To solve this problem once and for all, the village chief decided to offer two contracts to have water delivered to the village on a daily basis. He felt that a little competition would keep prices low and that was good for the villagers. Two people volunteered to take on the task and the chief awarded the contract to both of them.
One of them. Jack, immediately ran out, bought two big steel buckets and began running back and forth the lake which was 10 km away from the village. He immediately began making money. He worked from early morning to late evening carrying water from the lake with his two buckets. Each morning he had to get up before the villagers awoke to make sure there was enough water for the village for that day. It was hard work, but he was very happy to bemaking money and be able to buy the luxuries for his family.
The other contractor, Bill, disappeared for a while. Instead of buying more buckets to compete with Jack, Bill had gone to seek the best construction crews in the city and returned four months later with a team of the talented crews. Within a few months his team had built a large volume stainless steel pipeline which connected the village to the lake.
At the completion of the pipeline construction. Bill announced that his water was cleaner than Jack's water, as he knew that there had been complaints about dirt in Jack's water. Bill also assured the villagers that he could supply the water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Jack could only deliver water on the weekdays as he did not work on weekends. Then Bill announced that he could charge 50% less than Jack did for this higher quality and more reliable source of water. The villagers cheered and immediately ran for the faucet at the end of Bill's pipeline.
Eventually Jack hired a few employees. Like a lot of employees, they only worked as much as Jack told them to. Jack needed to pay them extra overtime wages in order to get them to work more. Even when the business was slow and was making loss, he still needed to pay the employees wages. Sometimes he himself needed to work the extra overtime because he couldn't afford to pay them the overtime wages. Soon, he was working day and night for his businessand had no time to spend with his family.
Bill, on the other hand, had no employees to pay. He could spend all his time doing the things he loved and enjoyed to do without going to work from 9 to 5 daily, and yet had a secured source of income. He could spend more time with his family and was able to show love and care and to educate his young children.
Soon, the larger villages nearby heard of the water supply in this little village. Their chiefs also offered contracts to deliver water to the villages on a daily basis. Bill confidently volunteered to take on the task. Jack saw this as an opportunity to expand his business. He also volunteered himself.
Bill immediately began the constructions. He only needed to invest some time and money at the beginning to construct the pipelines to the villages and he would secure a long-term water supply upon the completion of the pipelines.
Jack employed more employees to carry the water from the nearest lake to the villages. He earned more by delivering water to more villages. However, he also had higher commitments as he had to pay even more wages to more employees.
As Bill's pipeline construction was completed, he again offered his high speed,high volume, low cost, and clean water delivery system to those larger villages.Again, the villagers cheered and immediately ran to Bill's pipelines.
As Jack's business was bad, he soon sold off some of his personal assets to finance his business and to pay his employees. He also borrowed more money at fixed interest rates, sacked a few of his employees to cut cost and worked even longer hours himself to ensure sufficient supply of water to the villages.
Soon, Bill's pipeline delivery services expanded to all the villages around the world. Although he only makes a few cents per bucket of water delivered, his pipelines deliver billions of buckets of water everyday, around the world. Regardless of whether he works or not, billions of people consume billions of buckets of water, and all that money pours into his bank account. Bill had developed a pipeline to deliver money to himself as well as water to the villages.
Bill lived happily ever after with all the time freedom and financial freedom to enjoy his life and to provide the best things for his loved ones, while Jack worked hard for the rest of his life, not having time for other important things in life, had financial problems, unhappiness and family arguments forever after.

Perfectionist Visions The Perfect Life

Is it possible that there is "Perfection" all around us, waiting to be seen?
Can it be that the ups and downs of life that we all experience are actually resting in a daily reality of what can be seen as "perfect", if we will but only look at them differently?
I think so. Let me tell you why I believe this to be true.
I've come to believe that things do not happen for a reason. Let me explain. The problem with that idea is that it has to come from a point of view of the future, since we can only see the so-called "reason'"later on. And I know that since we are meaning-making creatures, that we can surely go ahead and make up whatever "reason" that best fits our view of life, and -- voila!-- there's our self-created reason for the situation happening.
That places the idea that things happen for a reason into pretty suspicious territory for me. Sure, it'd be nice to think that things do happen for a reason. But do they really?
What has felt like a better way for me to look at life is that there is perfection in everything that occurs, and that I exist within that perfection. Call it "The Universe in Perfection", if you will. I remember reading in Richard Bach's book, "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah", the Messiah, Donald Shimodo, was lying in some meadow, gazing up at the sky with his pal Richard. Donald at some point asked Richard, "Is that a perfect sky, or should those clouds be changed somehow to make them more perfect?" Richard of course says yes, it's a perfect sky, how could it not be? And Donald Shimodo comes back with, "Well then, what makes you think that your life could be any less perfect than that sky?"
That's when I realized that I move within that reality of perfection, as does all the Universe. How could it be otherwise? One of the great illusions we humans have bestowed upon ourselves, that all the spiritual masters who have walked this Earth encourage us to move away from, is the idea that we somehow are separate from the Universe. It's interesting to me that many of the most powerful religious organizations around say we're separate, because we're sinners, or what have you, yet their own spiritual leaders whom the religion is based on tell us that we are not. Funny how that happens, isn't it?
Once I realized this truth, that I am part of the Universe, not a separate entity, I began looking around me for perfection in all areas of life. Not just my life, but all of life. This called me to see perfection in people who I found annoying; to see perfection in people who got elected (or at least took offices, despite election '"troubles") whom I didn't want to be elected; to see perfection in the lives of my children, as they made their way through the world and grew up; and, of course right close to home, to see perfection in let-downs in my efforts that really hurt.
It's a challenge, to be looking for perfection all the time. I don't even pretend to be doing it well most of the time yet. But, in some perfectly human way, I do continue to try.
Perhaps there are times when you feel like your life is less than perfect. Maybe, like me, you find the idea of finding perfection to be an exciting one, almost a spiritual quest in itself. It just might be that this is one piece of the puzzle that has been alluding you, as it had me for many years. Maybe.

Kids learn the joy of a challenge at an early age. Unfortunately the majority of adults forget this most of the time. They live conservative lives avoiding adventure and challenge as much as possible, but that sense of adventure is still there deep inside, it just needs a little encouragement to show itself.

Build your life plan first and then create the business plan around your goals and dreams. If you do it this way your business will fit you like a glove. Set some time aside and put together a list of your personal goals.
Here are a few items to consider for your Life Plan:
>>My Values - What's most important to me and my family?
>>Hope and Dreams - What excites you? Where do want to go? Spend money on?
>>Family - How much time do I want to spend with our children?
>>Financial - How much money do we want to make? Can the business support our income goals? How much do we need to expand the business? How much do we need for our retirement years?
>>Friendships - Are we spending enough time with people who are important to us?
>>Fun - What makes life fun? How can I make a living having fun?
>>Interests - Will you have the time and the resources to entertain and travel? What places do we want to visit in the next few years?
>>Location - Where do we want to live?
>>Physical Health - How can we maintain our health?
>>Mental Health - How much stress do I want in my life?
>>Relationship with each other - Are we continually developing and improving our relationship?
>>Community - In what ways do we want to contribute to society?
>>Exit Strategies - Do we want to retire or sell the business? If so, what do we want the business to look like when we are ready to sell it or pass it on? Who will run it? Or do we just want to reduce our hours, and if so, when?
Once your life plan is written down then you can start to build a home based business plan that will meet and exceed your needs, wants and desires.

Life or Lifestyle?

What is a lifestyle and how is that different from a life? A lifestyle is about brand names and buying identity or prestige. Lifestyle gives a false sense of peace and acceptability that comes from others recognizing what you’ve bought into (as well as bought). If your car, clothes, and home are expensive, you’re sophisticated and stylish. If you have the right kind of job or go to the right social gatherings, then you receive the superficial approval of others. This means that your self-esteem is always at the mercy of others, with no appreciation of you as an individual.

A life, on the other hand, is very different. A life is what you lead when you know what matters most to you. It is very simple and comes from being connected to what you know is important and being willing to put that first, not matter what others may think. When you create a life vs. a lifestyle, your self-esteem comes from what’s inside you, not what others think about you.

How many times have you seen someone (this used to be me!) work long hours in a job that they do not enjoy just to be able to maintain an expensive lifestyle? There was a recent commercial on TV that showed a man laughing in his yard saying: “I drive an expensive car, have a 5 bedroom home, a country club membership, a swimming pool and I’m in debt up to my eyeballs!” Every time I see this commercial I think about the book - The Millionaire Next Door. The book says that most of the people living in the largest homes are exactly like the man in the commercial and that the real millionaires are the ones you would never guess, because their focus is on creating a life vs. a lifestyle.

Lifestyle is expensive monetarily and personally, because it costs a great deal to keep up appearances and do what you think is socially acceptable. A Life is not expensive. Rather than draining personal or financial resources, a life generates energy and staying power. If we focus on what we wear, or what kind of car we drive, or where we live, then we are saying that how others see us is more important than what we think of ourselves. If we find out what our true beliefs and values are and choose to live by these, then the opinions of others don’t drive our lives. This is not an issue of avoiding luxury for its own sake; it’s about liberating yourself from the mindless consumption that society dictates. It is about making the choices that are in line with your values, instead of draining your bank account or energy for no heart-driven reason.

How can you make the change? Understand the difference between a Life (being directed from within) and a Lifestyle (being directed from outside). Analyze your current lifestyle to see what it is costing you in money, time, stress, and energy to maintain it. Let go and make room for what is really important to you, what sustains you and brings you joy. Remember that who you are comes from within, not what you own!

Are Hidden Beliefs Creating a Lackluster Career?

If you could redesign your lifestyle just the way you want it, what would it look like? How would it feel? What’s in your way? Limiting thoughts, beliefs and feelings can impede your progress. Give voice to your dreams and enhance your ability to identify opportunities that move you closer to your ideal.

If you want to change the outcome or results, you have to change your thinking. Conflicts between your conscious and unconscious thoughts or beliefs affect what you experience. Here are some guidelines regarding career actions a person can explore no matter where they are to have a more fulfilling career.

How close are you at creating your dream career? What is holding you back? Are you afraid of success or failure? Have you lost your career passion and don’t know why?

Laura is self-employed real estate investor. She recalled that she once felt passionate about her work, but she lost it. She feels bored, apathetic, uninspired and unable to take any action. After working together on her limiting beliefs and stuck energy patterns, Laura learned that she needs to remind herself that she is grateful for the life she created.

Michael, an employee in a high tech company, and enjoys what he does in his marketing communications position. However, a recent merger has had a negative impact on the company culture. The changes are so dramatic he doesn’t feel as though he can be himself at work any more. The impact he’s feeling, both emotionally and physically, is so intense, he’s not sure how much longer he can stay in his job. Change Your Energy, Change Your Life

Laura learned that by changing her thoughts about herself, she shifted the energy she radiated into the world. Because everything is connected, she noticed the world around her shifting.

Here are some guidelines regarding career actions you could take to explore your next steps. They are supportive actions to accept yourself no matter where you are in your career.

1. Stay focused on your body. Notice your feelings rather than just being tuned into what everyone else is saying you should do for your career. Release other people’s expectations, beliefs or limitations that might be impeding your progress.

2. Be willing to take 100% responsibility for behaving in a way that makes you feel worthy, safe and powerful. Be willing to be who you really are rather than trying to impress. Make a conscious decision that being in integrity with who you really are, is more important than getting someone else’s approval.

3. When doubts creep into your mind about being confused and unclear remind yourself that you will know exactly what, when and how to do what you need to do. Remember to maintain your balance and stay in alignment with your true self.

4. Connect with your emotion of gratitude. Daily upon rising and going to bed, remind yourself of everything you are grateful for having, experienced or felt.

There’s so much around you that you are not acknowledging. Consider all the things you’ve created. If you are ready to create something new in your life, be grateful for what you have already created. This opens the flow to attracting more of what you desire.

As you increase your awareness and start to connect with the vibration of gratitude, you become clear on what you want to create. Don’t worry about how to achieve your dream career. Let go of fears of not being successful or not liking it after all.

5. Keep asking your inner wisdom, What is your highest good for right now?

Learn to validate yourself for being YOU. You are awesome! Be authentic! You are powerful and create your thoughts --- You will manifest your dream career.

Remember: Unconscious thoughts hiding in the shadows of your subconscious mind are creating the world around you. Do NOT disregard the little voice that says, “What if I can’t do it? What if I can’t measure up? What if I fail?”

Release the unwanted programs and limiting beliefs to create an inspired life and dream career.

Looking to travel the world, visit exotic locations? If you’d like to live overseas, then the first step is going to be taking a closer look at overseas jobs. After all, you can’t make it overseas without some hope of employment first, right?

Finding overseas jobs in your area of experience is a little different than finding jobs in your own home country. However, many of the Internet job boards also have international listings. Instead of looking under “overseas jobs” on an Internet search string, look for “international job listings.” This may yield more results, and you might have a better chance of finding what you’re looking for.

There are overseas jobs available for those considering a huge change. There are a great deal of jobs available in the teaching and government jobs categories, in fact, so consider looking here if you have some experience in these fields. The Internet makes finding overseas jobs much easier than using the telephone alone.

Instead of phoning, consider communicating through e-mails. Using the Internet, you can even send your resume overseas to potential employers. Use instant messenger services (which are free) instead of talking voice-to-voice over the phone. Conducting business through the Internet makes getting an overseas job much easier and affordable for you. Spending lots of money right before you move is never a good thing!

To get an overseas job, apply to every job that you honestly think you want or that you have some interest. Don’t be afraid to apply to any job that seems interesting to you, because it’s a lot easier to pick from several job offers than to have to take just one. So send out resumes, and have one prepared that you can send easily via e-mail. It’s also a good idea to keep a stock cover letter handy, as most employers expect to receive cover letters as well as resume from potential employees.

Sometimes, looking for overseas jobs can be time-consuming. If you’re looking for a particular city or country, finding the job you want may take even longer. But don’t give up! Keep looking, and you’ll end up finding exactly what you want. The only way to be sure you won’t get what you want is to give up on it, so keep going and keep trying until you find the opportunity you’ve been looking for. Getting an overseas job isn’t as important as finding a job you can be happy with.

Before you accept a job, find out what that job pays. Then, looking into the nearby living situation overseas. This, too, can be done using the Internet. The Internet is an international tool, and people overseas use it as much as the people in your own hometown. Find out what the cost of living is before you decide if the offered salary is acceptable to you or not. If you can’t afford to live overseas, then you might want to consider looking for another overseas job that pays a little bit more.

What’s your definition of success? You’ve probably heard it all before about the secret of success. The majority of people would say that having lots of money would be their definition of success. Success means different things to different people. Success can come in the form of happiness, developing quality relationships, goal achievements or a healthy lifestyle.

So how do you become successful? First, you need to ask yourself, what does success mean to you and what will it bring? You need to have a clear target in mind of exactly what you want. If you say I want to own a house; you need to state exactly what type of house. How many bedrooms? Where would it be?Is it big or small? If you visualize it, your goals will become more realistic and obtainable.

Your pathway to success is determined by your actions, vision, drive and the choices that you make. It sounds easy but life is full of distractions such as the media, internet, entertainment, parties and everything else in between. This is just a fact of life. The key is to do something small everyday to reach your goal. Breaking down your goals into smaller tasks makes them manageable. For example, your long-term goal can be achieved by completing your monthly goals, to achieve your monthly goals, you would need to hit your weekly target goals and your weekly target goals can be achieved by performing your daily goals.

What it takes to becomes successful.

1) Developing the right mindset.

You need to develop a successful mindset. The actions that you’ve taken to approach your goals and the choices that you’ve made, will determine your success or failure.
You also need to control your fears, worries and any form of limitations that will prevent you from reaching your goals. The biggest limitation we have is security where we’re clinging on to our comfort zones.

Also having a positive frame of mind and a positive environment will help you immensely in further reaching your goals. Your friends and other people around you, the place that you work for and how you maintain your health are all a very important part of the process.

You should also develop a process of continuous improvements. Learn something new everyday, whether it’s a small task like learning a new recipe to cook or something adventurous like scuba diving, it doesn’t matter. It teaches your mind to be creative and avoid limiting your ability. Other individuals can also help you in the process. Good mentors are hard to come by, but none of us are perfect and learning is the key to a better self.

2) It’s because you want to, and not because you have to.

Sometimes in life we feel that we have no other choice but to follow other people or to choose the simplest route to obtain comfort or security. We go about our business in our daily lives. It could be either our chosen hobby or job but the problem is we do it with no heart or passion. What if that day comes when that task becomes difficult or unpopular? We’d probably give up and quit.

Success is about you discovering your talent. Using your talent will give you that ultimate feeling of freedom. Identify what it is that you really want in life and your career. How will your talent help other people?

3) Action… matters!

You could go to college and do your university degrees, obtain the knowledge, read all the books you want and think that someday you will be successful. Someday just might never happen unless you take action in what you want to do. You could be the busiest person but probably didn’t accomplish anything. You need to ask; will the actions that I am taking now lead me closer to my goals? Start small, think big. Do not make another day become another habit. Time is valuable.

There Is Nothing Wrong With A Humble Beginning- Achieve YOUR Success With Honour & Integrity

Succeeding With Honour And Integrity - The Underlying Philosophy

What I share in this article is based on past and current achievements in which I have NEVER had to depend on any "Godfather", or "Connections" to succeed in whatever I embarked upon. You do NOT need to concentrate your efforts on searching for someone to help you start from somewhere closer to the top in order to get to the top faster. Many times it pays to be able to go through the process of "building your success from the ground up". This is not about re-inventing the wheel. There are certain experiences that one NEEDS to have in order to be fully competent to achieve at a certain level.

For instance, it is very unlikely that an upcoming boxer being likened by experts and bookmakers to "Mohammed Ali" because of the great skill and talent he shows in training, will fulfil predictions about him if he is not exposed to quality opposition. No matter how much his coach/trainer loves and believes in him, he ALONE will have to step into the ring and win EACH fight.

If someone outside the ring puts a drug in the opposing boxer's drink or does anything else to "weaken" the opposition", or influence the outcome of each fight, they would NOT be helping the "rising star" actualise the potential they believe he has. They would in fact be doing the exact opposite because he would never be driven hard enough to push himself to that crucial threshold point where every person who seeks authentic achievement digs deep enough into him/herself to discover his/her other self.

Trust me - I KNOW because I have gone through that process more than once:- Starting as a nobody in a new/different area of endeavour and then over time doing enough to earn the recognition and respect of all around me - including those who previously wrote me off, saying I could not do it(something that made me even MORE determined).

If you want to achieve authentic success that is truly YOURS and for which you will not have to tolerate or endure ANYONE say you owe him/her for it, then follow the ideas I offer here. People may do one or two things that help you on your climb up to success - no doubt about that. No man or woman is an island. The fact however remains that if you do it right, EVERYONE who sees you succeed will acknowledge that you DESERVE the success you eventually achieve. The key to succeeding with honour and integrity is to aim to EARN that success by putting in the necessary effort without seeking to cut corners in order to get there faster or with less pain. It's that simple.

Success Will ALWAYS Mean Different Things To Different People

Success means different things to different people - and very often it has LESS to do with money or material possessions, and MORE to do with self-fulfillment.

But some people find it difficult to understand that TRUE success - even for themselves - really needs to go beyond having money, power, influence, wealth or fame. They fail to realise that TRUE success is best defined(in my "humble" opinion :-)) as Emerson once stated:

"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!" - Ralph Waldo Emerson :

In my opinion, a humble beginning can be just as good as a quick rocket-like jump to success. In fact many times, the person who starts from a humble beginning may arrive late to the top, but actually end up staying there LONGER and doing BETTER than those who got there earlier.

The Reason: A humble beginning challenges a person to dig deep within him/herself to discover his/her other self in order to succeed. That self-discovery subsequently equips him/her to perform optimally in virtually every area of endeavour s/he SUBSEQUENTLY ventures.

Questions To Ponder About Success And Humble Beginnings

This may not make for pleasant reading - initially - but it is true that some people fail to understand that life cannot be viewed from the same perspective by everybody. Over the past five years, I have had cause to ask myself the following questions following my interaction with certain types of people who tried to force their fixed ideas/opinions down my throat. The reason they did this was that they questioned my willingness on many occasions to endure considerable lack - and even risk financial ruin - in order to achieve my purpose. Ironically, quite often I eventually succeeded(to their un-ending embarrassment)!

Here are twelve(12) questions I have had to ask myself while pursuing a humble beginning to my desired successes, because of these types of people. Depending on the kind of thinking that prevails in your socio-economic environment, if you are working to achieve YOUR OWN success with honesty and integrity, you might just find yourself asking the same questions too!

1. Why do they think because they put their love of money above all else, that every other person does(or will) - and that anyone who says s/he does not is only pretending?

2. Why do they think because they want to(or have already) become rich quick, every person does(or will want to) - and that anyone who says s/he does not want to is only pretending?

3. Why do they think because they believe in oppressing less fortunate people with their "hurriedly acquired" riches or power, every person does - and that anyone who says s/he does not is only pretending?

4. What will it take to make them understand that not every one goes through life thinking ME, MYSELF AND I every single minute of they day?

5. Why do they find it so hard to believe that a person can undertake major self-denial/sacrifice in order to find a solution that works for a larger majority of people in society?

6. Why do they assume every other person thinks like them, and is not capable of doing something out of an honest desire to help others and WITHOUT expecting ANYTHING in return or having any ulterior motives for doing so?

7. Why do they think because they find it easy to lie about their achievements, that every other person will be the same? Why do they fail to see that some people have too much self-esteem, and are just too achievement oriented, to descend to the lowly levels of making false claims about their achievements?

8. What will it take to make them understand that there are some human beings(like me) who do not believe they need to prove they are better than anyone else. And who instead prefer to think of how they can help as many people as possible who need it become BETTER than when they first met them?

9. Why won't they understand that life is more successfully lived when it is spent doing things that ultimately make the lives of others better?

10. Why is it so difficult for them to understand that everyone cannot follow the path THEY took to achieve their own version of success? Why can't they see that many roads lead to the market, and that each person will find a route that suits him or her best?

11. Why does it take them so much effort to imagine that someone can be willing to wait and learn over a protracted period how to become a long term authentic success at what s/he does? Why do they think every one has to be in a hurry to get everything the way THEY are?

12. Why do they think if I really have money, or if I'm really financially successful, the only way to prove it is to adopt (or return to?) a high consumption lifestyle?

Note: With respect to the last question(No. 12), I will add that anyone who has read the book titled "The Millionaire Next Door" knows that most truly financially successful/wealthy people live lives of frugality and prudence, because that's why/how they got to be wealthy in the first place!

For Greatness To Be Achieved A Humble Beginning May Sometimes Be Required!

According to the Bible, John the Baptist lived in the wild and ate locusts with honey. Yet he was the one who heralded the arrival of Jesus Christ whose birth is annually celebrated by millions the world over today. It was also John, who had the courage to face King Herod and publicly rebuke him for his bad deeds. John the baptist did not wear flashy clothes; rode no fancy horses/carriage and certainly did not have servants. And the manner of his death was not exactly what one would have expected for someone destined to play a crucial role in the making of history.

If John's circumstances could have been THAT "humble and humbling", despite the great role he was destined to play, how can anyone else who seeks to be great doubt that a humble beginning can lead him/her to succeed?

Don't be misled. Don't let THEM put pressure on you to do what goes against your feelings, values or morals. If you seek true success, follow the route that your heart tells you is right. Don't let the "hurry merchants" deceive you into thinking getting there through ANY route brings the same rewards: I want you to KNOW THAT IT DOES NOT! Here's a good way to know the difference:

a. A person who gets there quick/by cutting corners is SELDOM willing to take up a challenge to give it all up and start all over again from scratch - even if for the fun of it. In fact s/he would typically act TERRIFIED at such a proposal, and will often show desperation to ensure s/he never loses the riches already made or success/position already attained. And if/when s/he does accept to take up such a challenge, it is likely to be with the intention of cutting corners AGAIN to get it all back!

b. In contrast, the one who gets there though painstaking effort and perseverance, by learning to overcome humbling circumstances, will often demonstrate a calmness and confidence that is immediately obvious. S/he will act in a manner that shows his/her self-esteem is not derived from the presence or absence of whatever position, wealth, riches or fame s/he has acquired, but from a clear knowledge of who s/he is, and what s/he KNOWS s/he can do. In order words s/he will NOT be or act INSECURE.

What Would You Do If You Lost All Your Success & Wealth? Henry Ford(A "Humble Beginner)'s Answer...

One more thing. Anyone who achieves his/her success, wealth or fame via a humble beginning is likely to give a response similar to that given by Henry Ford when he was asked what he would do if he lost all of his wealth/empire. He is reported to have said..."I'll have it all back in five years". How could he have been so sure? Because he KNEW what he would have to DO to get it all back. He had done it before and he knew HOW to do it again to get the same results. If he had cut corners to get there the first time, he would never have been convinced he could produce the same results again.

That's what passing through humbling circumstances to "claw your way to success" will do for you. It will make you KNOW yourself well enough to know HOW to make yourself achieve the results you want as many times as necessary. What could possibly be better than KNOWING that you can REPRODUCE your success REPEATEDLY, as and when you want? Nothing that I can think of - it's the best possible way to live life!

What I Ask You To Do, I Have Always Done(And Will Continue To Do) - With Great Results To Show

And in case you are wondering, the answer is YES. I have done(and continue to do) exactly what I have said above. Early in my entrepreneurial career I met some entrepreneurs and so called elders who insisted to me that I was struggling to find clients for my services because I refused to "play the game" the way other entrepreneurs were playing it. Among other things, they referred to a widespread practice of offering someone(in a prospective client company for instance), a "piece of the action" in exchange for their influencing the award of a project. But having gotten used to getting ahead SOLELY on merit, by showing what I could do through most of my past life, I just could not come to terms with doing what they suggested. Here's what I said to one of them:

"If you are a TRUE entrepreneur, and you are sure you are competent enough to do what you claim you can do, then I do not see any reason why you would feel a need to influence the process of getting chosen by a prospective client. I am in business to make money profitably by delivering services or products that ADD VALUE to my clients. Any client who wishes to have me work for him/her, I will assume believes I am capable of doing just that i.e. adding VALUE to his/her business processes or operations. And it is that value they expect to get, that will make them willing to PAY ME PROFITABLY to do it."

You will not believe the number of people who looked at me sadly shaking their heads to indicate how sorry they felt for me, for adopting this uncompromising stand in an environment where - in their opinion - "buying your way" to get awarded projects worked better and more often - especially in a field like that I was engaged in(i.e. software development) which tended to be a bit "slow" due to a thriving software piracy industry.

Let me shed more light on how I see this issue, and how my perspective has helped me achieve the success I now enjoy in spite of expectations to the contrary.

The contact person that I meet in making my service or product offer to the prospective client will, I expect, have the potential value I promise to deliver in mind when trying to decide to hire or recommend me. If that is the case, s/he will therefore have NO REASON WHATSOEVER to ask me to share what I am going to be paid with him/her in order for her to influence the decision of the company in my favour. If I accept to do such a dis-honourable thing, I inadvertently admit that I am not as confident of my competence as I claim to be. Also I will be giving him/her the impression that I need him/her more than s/he needs me. Thirdly and consequently, I will LOSE ANY RESPECT I have as a professional before such a client's representative.

None of these three possible "rewards" appeal to me. And that is why today I have gradually built a reputation for building custom Excel-VB driven software, websites, natural aquariums etc for individuals and organisations by asking for (and very often getting) my payment 100% in advance. That my clients accepted to pay me in this unusual manner I believe is a VERY strong indication of the fact that they were CONVINCED of the value I could add to them through provision of my services*. Just four days ago(12th March 2007), I got a call from the accountant of a large Lagos hospital to pick up a 100% advance payment cheque to build an automated cash book for his department. This is the third time in 2007 that I will be building this kind of application for a hospital here in Lagos. And each time I have used the more recent version to "sell" my services to the next prospective client.

It took me over four years to get to where I am now. Yes, I did have to endure repeated rejection and puzzling lack of patronage from those I thought really should have seen that my services could help them, BUT I never let that sway me. Today, I am able to command the favourable attention and interest of a certain category of prospects who are willing to pay me very profitably to serve them. The reality from the foregoing is that I am, by insisting on following the unpopular path, achieving my desired goals and success with honour and integrity. If you follow the ideas I have offered in this article, you can do the same for yourself.

Identify The "Hurry Merchants" Around You, And Steer Clear Of Them!

I have met and in certain instances worked with (or studied closely) some business owners who call themselves entrepreneurs but display traits that suggest they are not. By this I mean that they demonstrated in their daily actions a lack many of the most distinguishing qualities of true, authentic entrepreneurs: Vision, Passion, Creativity, Originality, Risk Proclivity; Willingness to endure prolonged periods of suffering, hardship and adversity to achieve their dreams the right way i.e. without compromising, or cutting corners; Enduring love for what they do, regardless of whether or not the desired financial rewards are being reaped etc.

These individuals I noticed tended to measure their progress(and therefore that of anyone else they met), in terms of how quickly and easily they could make money and almost nothing else! They tended very often not do discriminate about how they made the money. That's why people like them are often prepared to buy their way repeatedly to get awarded jobs.

The above are some of the distinguishing characteristics of the "hurry merchants" I would suggest you avoid spending your quality time with - or more importantly - taking advice from about how to go about achieving your success. Over a year ago, I wrote an article titled "Avoid Taking Lessons On Entrepreneuring From The Wrong Person(s)" and another titled "Why You May Want To Rejoice When Others Mock You!". I suggest you read both of them for more ideas.

Summary

Do you want to be successful(financially and otherwise) and at the same time have PEACE of mind without EVER feeling threatened by anyone else?

If YES, then take my advice: Adopt a humble beginning in your pursuit of success, so that you can learn the rudiments of how to build your success from the ground up. That way, no matter how many times you may fall or lose anything you have(and this CAN happen to prepare you - if you let it - to succeed at a higher level!), you will KNOW how to get it back again, and again, and again. You would by so doing be able to achieve what is called SUSTAINABLE long term success.

There is nothing wrong with a humble beginning. If that's what you find yourself having, BE GRATEFUL, and use it to your advantage. In future, when you have succeeded, you'll be glad you did!

FINAL WORDS: For those who may feel that the "tone" of this article suggests I am trying to show off or blow my trumpet(i.e. I am not being humble...or not humble "enough"), I will say that my attitude has always been that it does NOT do me or anyone else any good to keep useful information in my possession away from those who may benefit from using it simply because I want to avoid being perceived to be "UN-HUMBLE"!

Lastly, I believe it is not wrong or bad to be humble, but it will NOT help you to become OVER-HUMBLE! As well as being viable from a business perspective, it’s also crucial that setting up a company is appropriate for your personal needs. It’s a huge commitment that will require a lot of hard work, so you need to be sure that you’re up to it and that your lifestyle can support it. You also need to examine your skills, experience and attitudes, for example, can you lead a team or manage accounts, do you know the industry, and how do you feel about taking risks?

To help you explore whether it’s the right thing for you, it’s important to understand your objectives thoroughly – both personal and company goals. Are they achievable and are they compatible with each other? Consider these objectives in terms of working hours, career aspirations, personal progression, risk, money and flexibility.

Below are some of the pros and cons of being self-employed:

Pros

Independence – your work can be much more flexible so you can achieve a balance between your job and your home life much more easily. Of course the business needs will always be a priority, but if these are met then you can take time off whenever you want.

And you’re the one who’s in charge so it all falls on your shoulders to make it work – which can mean working all the hours necessary, often evenings and weekends. Don’t kid yourself that it will be an easy life – you will inevitably be working more hours than if you were an employee of a company. Another downside of working long hours is that it won’t just curtail your personal life, but it could also lead to a confusion between work and home as many small business owners find themselves working whenever and wherever it is necessary. This can often cause tension with partners or families.
How much power do you have? – most people have to borrow money in some way or another to allow them to set up their business, which means they will have responsibilities to their lenders or investors who will no doubt want to see the business plans and may want to be consulted on major decisions to ensure that their financial interests are being taken care of effectively and efficiently.

Stress factor – you have a lot of responsibilities as a small business owner, and as you’re ultimately in charge you may sometimes find yourself feeling under a lot of pressure, which can affect both your performance in your job and your home life. People who are self employed are more likely to take their worries home with them as they feel a constant pressure.

Failure – we all make mistakes from time to time. It’s just a natural part of the learning process and even the most successful business owners wouldn’t have got where they did without the odd slip-up or misjudgement here and there. Some of us are better at dealing with failure than others, though, and your attitude will have a great impact on the success of your business. If you take it in your stride when something doesn’t go to plan, and just fix it, get on with it and put it down to experience, you’re more likely to make a success of your business. You must be able to cope with challenges and failure if you want to become self employed.

Juggling tasks – when you’re setting up your business you may not be able to afford to employ other people to help you – so you’ll have to do a lot of different jobs yourself. If you’re not confident in dealing with areas such as bookkeeping, admin, selling and promotion you may find your business struggling to survive. You must assess your skills and experience honestly and think about whether you really will be able to do it.

No more perks – people working for employers, especially large companies, tend to receive a great deal of perks and benefits which can often be taken for granted. If you’re considering setting up your own business, think carefully about exactly what benefits you would be giving up and whether you can afford to, or are prepared to, make such sacrifices. For a start, you’ll lose job security, and you may also have to give up private health insurance, pension plan, company car and perhaps company discounts and vouchers.

So there’s a lot to think about. You need to ensure that your both business needs and your personal needs can be met by setting up in business and that they are not in conflict with each other. You must be absolutely certain that this is the right decision for you – if you’re not fully committed to the idea, you won’t have the drive and motivation to make it work. It may be possible to start off your business as a trial first, part-time only, while keeping your main job, in order to assess whether you want to go the whole hog. This will depend on the needs of your business and the finances needed to start up.
